Create an Emergency Plan
O Meet with household
members ~ discuss with
children the dangers of
fire, sever weather,
earthquakes and other
emergencies
O Discuss how to respond to
each disaster
O Discuss what to do about
power outages
O Discuss what to do about
personal injuries
O Draw a floor plan of your
house, and mark two
escape plans from each
room
O Learn how to turn off the
water, gas and electricity
at main switches
O Post emergency phone
numbers near telephones
O Teach everyone, young
and old, how and when to
call 911 - police, fire and
emergency medical care
O Tell household members
to turn on the radio for
emergency information
O Pick one out-of-state and
one local friend or relative
to call if family is
seperated by disaster
(remember that it is often
easier to call out-of-state
than within the affected
disaster area)
O Teach children how to
make long distance phone
calls
O Pick two meeting spots-
one near your home, and
one outside your
neighborhood in case you
cannot return home after a
disaster
O Take first aid and CPR
training classes
O Keep family records in a
water and fire-proof
container
|
Prepare a Disaster Supplies Kit
Assemble supplies you may
need in an evacuation, and store
them in an easy-to-carry container
(such as a backpack).
Include:
O A supply of water (one
gallon per person per
day), stroed in sealed,
unbreakable containers
(date the container and
replace the contents every
six months)
O A supply of non-
perishable packaged or
canned food and a non-
electric can opener
O A change of clothing, rain
gear, and sturdy shoes
O Blankets or sleeping bags
O A first aid kit and
prescription medications
O An extra pair of glasses
O A battery-powered radio,
flashlight, and plenty of
extra batteries
O Credit cards and cash
O An extra set of car keys
O A list of family physicians
O A list of important family
information, including
medical information about
each person
O Special items for infants,
elderly, and disabled
family members
